D licence — Passenger transport (bus)

The D licence can be obtained from age 21 with a theory and practical test.

Vehicles you may drive with a D licence

• Buses carrying more than 8 passengers besides the driver; a trailer with an authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg may be attached

For scheduled services, hire with driver or school buses you also need Driver CPC for passenger transport.

DE licence — Bus with trailer

DE can be obtained from age 24 after holding D.

Vehicles you may drive with a DE licence

DE covers combinations of a category D tractor and a trailer or semi-trailer with an authorised mass over 750 kg.

For professional use on scheduled services, hire with driver or school transport you also need Driver CPC for passengers.

DE practical test

If you obtained D before 01/03/2015, the practical test lasts at least 45 minutes and includes theory questions on towing plus appropriate driving skill for the vehicle.

If you obtained D after 02/03/2015, the practical test lasts at least 45 minutes and focuses on appropriate driving skill for the vehicle.

Tests include vehicle preparation and safety checks, behaviour in traffic, moving off from standstill, parking, etc.
